GSK advances mRNA flu vaccine to phase 3 after positive results

(Alliance News) - GSK PLC on Tuesday said a phase 2 probe of its mRNA flu vaccine candidate showed positive results and that phase 3 trials will start this month.

(Alliance News) - GSK PLC on Tuesday said a phase 2 probe of its mRNA flu vaccine candidate showed positive results and that phase 3 trials will start this month. The London-based pharmaceuticals company said its flu vaccine candidate showed higher immune responses against all flu types compared with currently licensed vaccines, both at a standard dose for younger adults and at a higher dose for older adults. GSK said the vaccine candidate was "generally well tolerated".

The product will now advance to phase 3 trials. The vaccine candidate uses messenger RNA technology and is designed to target the two molecules responsible for the spread of flu viruses, as opposed to currently licensed flu vaccines, which primarily target only one of them, GSK explained. The company added that there is growing evidence to suggest targeting both could improve protection, reduce illness severity and limit transmission.

Sanjay Gurunathan, head of vaccines & infectious diseases research & development at GSK, said: "With one billion flu cases worldwide each year and up to 650,000 deaths there is a need for next generation vaccine approaches." GSK shares rose 0.2% to 1,858.00 pence in London. By Camilla Borri, Alliance News reporter Comments and questions to newsroom@alliancenews.com Copyright 2026 Alliance News Ltd. All Rights Reserved.
