Future of Chester's landmark Grosvenor hotel 'secured'

The Chester Grosvenor hotel is to be taken over by the Martin Property Group. The landmark five-star hotel, which has operated for over 150 years, is set to close on 30 September after Bespoke Hotels announced its closure earlier in the year. A safety issue with RAAC concrete in some conference rooms was disclosed during this announcement.

The refurbishment, planned to take about two years and subject to planning consent, will be Grosvenor’s first extensive makeover in over 40 years. The project aims to blend conservation with contemporary design, while creating new employment opportunities and strengthening Chester’s tourism and hospitality economy.

Grosvenor, a family-owned entity, owns the freehold of the Grade II listed property and has a long-term commitment to Chester’s success. The Martin Property Group, known for operating luxury hotels, has acquired the freehold of the Grosvenor Shopping Centre (now Eastgate Square Chester) and contributed to bringing Harrods’ H beauty store to Chester.

Former staff include Michelin-starred chef and Great British Bake Off star Paul Hollywood. The hotel’s refurbishment will ensure it remains a city landmark for future generations, reflecting confidence in Chester’s long-term prospects.
